Due to a more physiological reproduction of the in vivo situation, liver‐on‐a‐chip devices in recent studies have shown higher sensitivity and accuracy for hepatotoxicity testing compared to traditional in vitro liver models. In this context, this work presents an original microfluidic device mimicking 3D hepatic cords organized radially, like in the liver lobule. Ten cell‐culture chambers seeded at a high density are disposed with a parallelized flow that emulates blood flow from the portal triad to the central vein in the liver lobule. Using this device, on‐chip differentiation of human HepaRG‐Hepatoblast (HepaRG‐HB) to HepaRG‐Hepatocytes (HepaRG‐HC) has been studied in terms of self‐organization capabilities, bile canaliculi formation and albumin expression. Our results indicate that due to the design of the cell culture chamber, which mechanically constrains tissue proliferation, and the physiologically relevant microfluidic flow condition used during tissue development, the HepaRG‐HBs in the device can proliferate, self‐organize, and spontaneously differentiate in a DMSO free medium forming long, directional bile canaliculi. On the contrary, under the same conditions, differentiated HepaRG‐HC is observed to aggregate without long bile canaliculi and form tissues resembling traditional HepaRG‐HC cultures. © 2024 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) biosensor is one of the devices that enables label‐free evaluation of biomolecular reactions. Commercial QCM biosensors have less than 10 channels for detection and are not suitable for the screening. The sensitivity of the QCM biosensor increases as the quartz thickness becomes thinner; however, the limit of thinning is 60–330 μm. In this study, applying micromachining technology, a QCM sensor array chip of 15 mm square that had 100 ultra‐thin quartz resonators (2.5 μm) that were operated wirelessly was developed. And we succeeded in detecting the resonance spectrum through the device evaluation. © 2024 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Published by Wiley Periodicals LLC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Prognostic and diagnostic models must work in their intended clinical setting, proven via "external evaluation", preferably by authors uninvolved with model development. By systematic review, we determined the proportion of models published in high-impact radiological journals that are evaluated subsequently. Methods: We hand-searched three radiological journals for multivariable diagnostic/prognostic models 2013–2015 inclusive, developed using regression. We assessed completeness of data presentation to allow subsequent external evaluation. We then searched literature to August 2022 to identify external evaluations of these index models. Results: We identified 98 index studies (73 prognostic; 25 diagnostic) describing 145 models. Only 15 (15%) index studies presented an evaluation (two external). No model was updated. Only 20 (20%) studies presented a model equation. Just 7 (15%) studies developing Cox models presented a risk table, and just 4 (9%) presented the baseline hazard. Two (4%) studies developing non-Cox models presented the intercept. Just 20 (20%) articles presented a Kaplan–Meier curve of the final model. The 98 index studies attracted 4224 citations (including 559 self-citations), median 28 per study. We identified just six (6%) subsequent external evaluations of an index model, five of which were external evaluations by researchers uninvolved with model development, and from a different institution. Conclusions: Very few prognostic or diagnostic models published in radiological literature are evaluated externally, suggesting wasted research effort and resources. Authors' published models should present data sufficient to allow external evaluation by others. To achieve clinical utility, researchers should concentrate on model evaluation and updating rather than continual redevelopment. Clinical relevance statement: The large majority of prognostic and diagnostic models published in high-impact radiological journals are never evaluated. It would be more efficient for researchers to evaluate existing models rather than practice continual redevelopment. Key Points: • Systematic review of highly cited radiological literature identified few diagnostic or prognostic models that were evaluated subsequently by researchers uninvolved with the original model. • Published radiological models frequently omit important information necessary for others to perform an external evaluation: Only 20% of studies presented a model equation or nomogram. • A large proportion of research citing published models focuses on redevelopment and ignores evaluation and updating, which would be a more efficient use of research resources. Aiming at the current control steady‐state error caused by sampling delay, parameters mismatch of direct‐drive permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). This paper proposed a method of dual model predictive control (MPC) of direct‐drive PMSM based on sliding mode disturbance observer (SMDO). Deadbeat predictive current control (DPCC) is used for current loop, a SMDO is proposed to observe the system disturbance, the estimation is compensated to DPCC by feedback to decrease the current control steady‐state error. For speed loop, MPC with an internal model control observer (IMCO) can observe and compensate the load disturbance feedforward. The experimental results show that, the dynamic response speed of the proposed strategy is fast, the speed recovery time after sudden load torque is short, and the anti‐load disturbance performance and current tracking performance are effectively improved. © 2024 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Mixed methods (MM) designs have gained more recognition in psychology in recent years due to the complementary strengths of integrating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The central elements of a MM design can be particularly useful in the field of school psychology, where both generalizations of group characteristics and exploration of individual perspectives are valued. Given the advantages of MM and their potential benefits in school psychology research, it is important to know the extent to which MM studies are published in school psychology journals and the general characteristics of such studies. This study examined articles published from 2011 to 2020 in six well‐known school psychology journals to (a) document the prevalence of MM articles published in each journal and in each year, (b) examine the characteristics of the identified MM studies, and (c) explore possible trends of MM publications in the 10‐year period. Findings revealed that although there is a significant increasing trend of MM studies published from the first 5 years (2011–2015) to the second 5 years (2016–2020), the percentage of MM studies is still very small in the journals assessed. Explanations, future study directions, and practical implications are provided to call for more attention and effort in facilitating the training and application of MM research. Practitioner Points: Mixed methods studies could provide more comprehensive findings by integrating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. There is a relatively low number of mixed methods studies published in school psychology journals from 2011 to 2020.There is an increasing trend of mixed methods articles published from 2011 to 2020. Many journals in ecology and evolutionary biology encourage or require authors to make their data and code available alongside articles. In this study we investigated how often this data and code could be used together, when both were available, to computationally reproduce results published in articles. We surveyed the data and code sharing practices of 177 meta-analyses published in ecology and evolutionary biology journals published between 2015–17: 60% of articles shared data only, 1% shared code only, and 15% shared both data and code. In each of the articles which had shared both (n = 26), we selected a target result and attempted to reproduce it. Using the shared data and code files, we successfully reproduced the targeted results in 27–73% of the 26 articles, depending on the stringency of the criteria applied for a successful reproduction. The results from this sample of meta-analyses in the 2015–17 literature can provide a benchmark for future meta-research studies gauging the computational reproducibility of published research in ecology and evolutionary biology. In 2017, the editio princeps of a newly discovered Middle Persian text, the "Mādayān ī Wīrāzagān" or simply "Wīrāzagān", was published by Raham Asha. This text, which is important not only from a literary and religious perspective, but also from a mythological point of view, was previously unknown to the scholarly community. The Middle Persian original of the text is found in the Codex TD 26 (49r-62v), preserved in the library of the K.R. Cama Oriental Institute, Mumbai. The manuscript was first discovered and studied by R. Asha in March 2011. The preliminary remarks on the Mādayān ī Wīrāzagān and other texts contained in the Codex TD 26 (Ms. R 494) were published in 2012 in the journal of the same institution. Here I present a translation (accompanied by the transliteration and transcription) of the original text published on pages 3–16 of Asha's book. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

VALUATION , *PUBLISHING , *RESEARCH personnel , *PERIODICAL publishing , *LOGITS , *EMPLOYEE seniority - Abstract
Lists of endorsed and discouraged scholarly publications recently emerged as an important transition in Chinese journal evaluation. Among the targeted users of these lists are researchers, who are to avoid publishing in discouraged journals and focus efforts on endorsed journals. However, it is unclear how these lists affect researchers' valuations when choosing publication outlets. This explorative study investigates the reception of such journal lists in Chinese scientists' research practices. Our findings suggest that three logics interact in respondents' journal valuations: institutional evaluation regimes, differing epistemic cultures, and the influence of the commercial publishing industry. The reactive effects of both endorsed and discouraged journal lists appear to differ with the ranking status of universities, the seniority of scholars, and research fields. Apart from the new institutional evaluation regimes in this interplay, there appear to be more predominant factors than journal lists that inform publishing choices: quantitative indicators, publishers' branding, epistemic cultures, and editorial procedures and publishing models. To improve the pulse width modulation (PWM) harmonic suppression effect of the three‐phase VSI‐fed PMSM system, this paper proposed a novel random switching period (RSP)‐Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) technique for the three‐phase power converter. First, the proposed technique replaces the 10‐bit linear feedback shift register pseudorandom number generator (LFSR‐PRNG) with a Tiny Mersenne Twister (MT)‐PRNG to quickly generate high‐quality pseudorandom number sequences. Then, to reduce the sampling error caused by the current ripple, this paper analyzes the sampling timing under different modulation techniques. Based on the interrupted update mechanism of the Infineon AURIX‐TC264, the variable frequency sampling of the RSP‐SVPWM technique is implemented to ensure the best sampling of the motor phase current. Finally, the simulation and experimental results show that the proposed technique can effectively disperse PWM harmonic energy. Meanwhile, the RSP‐SVPWM technique based on variable sampling frequency effectively improves the phase current quality of the PMSM system. The proposed technique shows great potential for suppressing PWM harmonics in integrated PMSM systems. © 2023 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Published by Wiley Periodicals LLC. Chemical Reviews, a leading scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society in the field of chemistry is going to complete its 100 years of journey. On that note, this study aims to conduct a scientometric analysis of the contributions made by the Indian chemists to that journal. The analysis is based on scientometric indicators such as the number of publications, citation count and authorship patterns to provide a comprehensive overview of Indian scientists' impact on the journal. The study reveals that India is among the top contributors to the journal, with a substantial increase in the number of publications over the past few years. Furthermore, Indian authors have published highly cited articles, indicating the high-quality research being conducted in the country. The analysis of authorship patterns shows that collaborations between Indian and foreign researchers are increasing, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in scientific research. A comprehensive content analysis explores the focus area transition of the published work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This systematic review aimed to investigate the relationship between retraction status and the methodology quality in the retracted non-Cochrane systematic review. Method: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched with keywords including systematic review, meta-analysis, and retraction or retracted as a type of publication until September 2023. There were no time or language restrictions. Non-Cochrane medical systematic review studies that were retracted were included in the present study. The data related to the retraction status of the articles were extracted from the retraction notice and Retraction Watch, and the quality of the methodology was evaluated with the AMSTAR-2 checklist by two independent researchers. Data were analyzed in the Excel 2019 and SPSS 21 software. Result: Of the 282 systematic reviews, the corresponding authors of 208 (73.75%) articles were from China. The average interval between publish and retraction of the article was about 23 months and about half of the non-Cochrane systematic reviews were retracted in the last 4 years. The most common reasons for retractions were fake peer reviews and unreliable data, respectively. Editors and publishers were the most retractors or requestors for retractions. More than 86% of the retracted non-Cochrane SRs were published in journals with an impact factor above two and had a critically low quality. Items 7, 9, and 13 among the critical items of the AMSTAR-2 checklist received the lowest scores. Discussion and conclusion: There was a significant relationship between the reasons of retraction and the quality of the methodology (P-value < 0.05). Plagiarism software and using the Cope guidelines may decrease the time of retraction. In some countries, strict rules for promoting researchers increase the risk of misconduct. To avoid scientific errors and improve the quality of systematic reviews/meta-analyses (SRs/MAs), it is better to create protocol registration and retraction guidelines in each journal for SRs/MAs. This study critically analyses popular and children's science magazines published in Kerala, a southern state of India. It examines how these magazines construct an ideal Hindu nation and citizen through different narratives. Here, I argue that the imagery of popular children's magazines in Kerala is rooted in the Hindu ideal – wherein dominant masculine characters and a glorified Hindu cultural past are foregrounded. In these magazines, the idealisation of Hindu masculinity takes place through presenting Muslims as less progressive / incapable of acquiring "modern standards". In this context, the Hindu emerges as a reformer who helps the Muslim to "acquire modernity". Also, children's science magazines view science as a means for liberation from religion and irrational beliefs through critiquing "irrational" stories in popular Malayalam children's magazines. But a close examination of science magazines reveals that it is embedded in the very religious ideologies from which it is seeking liberation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Predatory publishing is the unethical and dishonest behavior of publishers who take advantage of researchers by charging them too much money and not providing good editing and peer-review services. Scholars, publishers and policymakers are seeking solutions to combat predatory publishing, which has become a major academic problem. This research paper provides a bibliometric analysis of the citation patterns and trends in the predatory publishing literature. The study analyzed the 100 top-cited papers on predatory publishing and provided insight into the types of documents, journals, authors, and countries that contributed to this field. The average citation per paper in the top 100 selected publications was 53.67. Open-access publications received a significantly higher average citation per paper than subscription-based papers. "Article" was the major type of document published, followed by "Notes," "Reviews" and "Editorials." Nature and Learned Publishing were the journals that contained the highest number of top-cited articles. J. Beall and D. Moher authored the highest number of papers, while A. Grudniewicz had the highest average citation per paper. USA and Canada were the top countries in these top-cited publications. This study will be beneficial to the all the stakeholders who may be interested in this area of research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article provides a new exploration of disabled innovation that transforms our understanding of collective contributions to the history of science and technology. It does so by showing how a user network galvanized individual inventions into disabled expertise by tracking the development of two technologies—the Selectascan/Possum and the adapted Loudspeaking Telephone. Hamraie and Fritsch's 2019 "Crip Technoscience Manifesto" defined "disabled expertise" by exploring how disabled technology modification has been devalued. This article takes up their manifesto's challenge to combine disability history with science and technology studies by analyzing the technologies discussed in Responaut , a British quarterly magazine published between 1963 and 1989. Responauts were people who depended on respirators to breathe. This technological interdependence meant that users adapted an extraordinary variety of technologies to live well with respirators and modify their personal environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We model the impact of different incentives on journal behavior in undertaking peer review. Under one scheme, the journal aims to publish the highest-quality papers; under the second, the journal aims to maintain a high rejection rate. Under both schemes, journals prefer to set very high standards for acceptance despite allowing significant error in peer review. Under the second scheme, however, in order to encourage more submissions of mediocre papers, the journal is incentivized to make its editorial process less accurate. This leads to both worse peer review and lower-quality articles being published. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the growth of open access (OA) journal publishing, a myriad of funding models has emerged to serve as an alternative to the traditional subscription model. Models that impose author facing charges are inequitable, favoring well-resourced authors and institutions, and continue the dominance of publications from the Global North. This exploratory study critically examines the current state of funding OA journal publishing and the disruptive role of library publishing programs. We conclude with a discussion of the potential of the LYRASIS Open Access Community Investment Program as a tool to support library publishing programs to sustainably fund inclusive OA journal publishing. With the Republic, the new Turkish state encouraged the collection and research of Turkish folklore materials from Anatolia. Periodicals became an organ where these researches were published and discussed. Published in 1933 by Yaşar Nabi Nayır, Varlık was a magazine in which intellectuals wrote and discussed their observations of Anatolia. Between 1958 and 1962, Yahya Benekay published a series of articles titled "On the Roads of the Southeast" in this magazine. In 1963, this series was awarded the "Turkish Language Association Interview Award". The series included both the rituals and beliefs of the local people and the legends believed/remembered by the civil servants traveling to those regions. Despite this, Benekay's series of articles have not been analyzed in terms of folklore before. In our study, the legends and myths in the series are classified, and the perspectives of the local people and civil servants on the narratives are tried to be conveyed with an unbiased eye. This study focuses on the writers and journals of the Ara Nesil period, which begins with the end of the Tanzimat period and ends with the beginning of Servet-i Fünûn. The main purpose of the study is to examine the position of the literature of the Ara Nesil in Turkish literature, its content, artistic features, language and the effects of the journals of this period on literature. Some of the writers of the Ara Nesil maintained the tradition of Divan literature by defending Old Turkish literature, while others tried to establish a balance between Old Turkish literature and the New Turkish literature after Tanzimat. Others were influenced by Western literature and developed a new language and style. This last group of writers were influential in the formation of the Servet-i Fünûn Period and contributed important works to Turkish literature. The literature of the Ara Nesil was a turning point not only for Turkish literature but also for social life. The literary figures of this period played a leading role in the renewal of our traditional literature by adopting modernism and westernization in Turkish literature. Thus, they prepared the beginning of a new era in Turkish literature. Many magazines were published during the Ara Nesil period. The writers of the Ara Nesil period contributed to the literature of the period by publishing their works in these journals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research aims to evaluate the publication of scholarly journals in Lithuania, a small-language country, by analyzing the owners and publishers of scholarly journals. The results show that, since 1990, the publishing of Lithuanian scholarly journals has grown significantly: 225 scholarly journals were published in Lithuania by 73 different publishers in 2020. Social publishers, mostly state-funded universities, scientific institutes and colleges still held the largest market share of scholarly journals, but commercial publishers also appeared and started to make a business out of publishing scholarly journals. The analyzed data on publishers show that Lithuanian publishers have tried to take over and reorganize a number of scholarly journals from the Soviet era, while adapting to the dynamically changing world of scholarly publishing and moving from simple product sales models of the twentieth century to new digital ecosystems of the twenty-first-century age in which the essential distribution of publications is carried out digitally. From the second half of the nineteenth century until World War I, the written press was the major channel of communication between the elites and the majority of the population. At the same time, the press was the primary means of an attempt to educate on a broad scale. The present research followed the abovementioned process in the most important magazines published by Romanians in the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1868 to 1914: Familia, Transilvania, and Luceafărul. They were well received by Romanians living in the Kingdom of Romania, generating debates on ideas that helped all Romanians' social, political, and economic development. This article focuses on the presentation and analysis of educational topics, believing that the studied periodicals had, as a primary purpose, the mentioned aspect. The article begins with a historiographical analysis and a short presentation of the researched magazines, followed by a discussion of the leading educational topics published over time. In this article, we aimed to analyze the development process of physical education and teaching in Türkiye during the Second Constitutional Period by examining the visual contents in the “Terbiye ve Oyun” (Physical Education and Games) magazine published by Selim Sırrı Tarcan, who pioneered the development of physical education culture in our sports history. In this article, considering the historical process, the change in sports culture in the Ottoman Empire was examined in the context of “physical education.” All visual content related to sports and physical education was analyzed by the content analysis method in 30 issues of “Terbiye ve Oyun,” which was published by Selim Sırrı Tarcan in two different periods in 1911 and 1922. When all the visual content featured in the magazine is examined, it is seen that the magazine did not only provide its readers with content related to physical education and gymnastics but also featured informative content about children’s favorite games, entertainment activities, and different sports branches. In this context, it has been tried to reflect the visual content that the magazine offers to its readers in order to contribute to physical education and sports culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article, published in the journal Insect Science, examines the nesting behavior of paper wasps from a physics perspective. The study focuses on how paper wasps arrange their larvae within the nest to achieve mechanical stability. By analyzing various paper wasp nests in Central Java, Indonesia, the study finds that the closer the distance between the center of mass of the larval system and the center of mass of the nest, the more stable the nest becomes. The findings suggest that paper wasps strategically arrange their larvae to achieve equilibrium in their nests. [Extracted from the article]

INDEPENDENT variables , *CROSS-sectional method , *CONFIDENCE , *WOUNDS & injuries , *PERIODICAL publishing - Abstract
Background/Aims: High methodological quality is required to interpret results of systematic reviews (SRs) in a reliable and accurate manner. The primary aim of this study was to appraise the methodologic quality of SRs with meta‐analysis within the field of traumatic dental injuries using the A MeaSurement Tool to Assess systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) 2 tool and assess overall confidence in their results. A secondary aim was to identify potential predictive factors associated with methodological quality. Materials and Methods: SRs with meta‐analyses published in English in the field of traumatic dental injuries from inception to March 2023 were identified. The methodological quality of the included reviews was assessed using the AMSTAR 2 checklist. Two independent evaluators scored each AMSTAR 2 item as "yes" if it was adequately addressed, "partial yes" if it was partially addressed, and "no" if it was not addressed. The overall confidence in the results of each review was classified as "High," "Moderate," "Low," or "Critically low." Using multiple regression, the relationship between five predictor variables (journal impact factor, year of publication, number of authors, journal adherence to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta‐analyses [PRISMA] guidelines and a priori protocol registration) and the total AMSTAR 2 scores was analyzed. The p‐value was 5%. Results: Forty‐one SRs were included. The overall confidence in the results of 13 reviews was categorized as "Critically low," 18 as "Low," 3 as "Moderate" and 7 as "High." Among the five predictor variables analyzed statistically, impact factor of the journal and year of publication significantly influenced the total AMSTAR 2 scores. The number of authors, adherence to PRISMA guidelines, and a priori protocol registration had no significant impact on AMSTAR 2 scores. Conclusion: The overall confidence in the results of SRs with meta‐analysis within the field of traumatic dental injuries was "Low" or "Critically Low" in the vast majority of studies (31 of 41). SRs with meta‐analyses published in journals with higher impact factors and more recent publications had significantly higher methodological quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HABIT , *PERIODICAL publishing - Abstract
Purpose: In this study, the authors want to identify current possible causes for citing and referencing errors in scholarly literature to compare if something changed from the snapshot provided by Sweetland in his 1989 paper. Design/methodology/approach: The authors analysed reference elements, i.e. bibliographic references, mentions, quotations and respective in-text reference pointers, from 729 articles published in 147 journals across the 27 subject areas. Findings: The outcomes of the analysis pointed out that bibliographic errors have been perpetuated for decades and that their possible causes have increased, despite the encouraged use of technological facilities, i.e. the reference managers. Originality/value: As far as the authors know, the study is the best recent available analysis of errors in referencing and citing practices in the literature since Sweetland (1989). Purpose: The purpose of the research was to find out if there are any differences in the readability score between abstracts published in scientific journals from library and information science with and without an impact factor. Therefore, the author made a comparison between the readability of abstracts from one journal with (Journal of Documentation) and one journal without (Knjižnica or Library) an impact factor. Design/methodology/approach: As a measure of readability, the Flesch Reading Ease Readability Formula was used. Then, with the help of statistical experts, a comparison of the readability scores between the abstracts of two selected journals was performed. Findings: The results showed that some statistically important differences exist between the abstracts published in the Journal of Documentation and Knjižnica. The statistically important differences were found in the number of words and sentences in abstracts and in the readability of abstracts included in the research. Therefore, it can be said that there exists a statistically important difference between abstracts with and without an impact factor. Originality/value: The primary purpose was to find out whether there is a statistically important difference in the readability score of abstracts with and without an impact factor in the field of library and information science. Some similar research studies have been conducted in other scientific fields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main objective of the study is to review different types of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems that are analysed by using the fuzzy TOPSIS method and its different variants. An effort has been made to review different studies in which either the TOPSIS method is used or its extensions have been developed to analyse any real-life MCDM problem. A total of 184 research papers were carefully selected and reviewed from 83 reputed journals published by Elsevier, Springer, Wiley, Taylor and Francis, and others from 1981 to the first quarter of 2023. These papers are selected on the basis of different kinds of applications in the fields of mathematics, engineering, science, environment, technology, management, business, etc. The selected papers are further categorised based on the application areas, publication year, contributions of the countries, authors, journals, and type of research. This study will give an idea of different types of TOPSIS methods, their extensions, and applications, along with recent trends in diverse research fields. Based on the findings, it is observed that in recent years, the number of papers in which TOPSIS and its extensions have been used has increased exponentially. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
